How do I calculate my course load?

You are considered full-time if you’re taking 60% or more of a full course load (or 40% if you have a permanent disability or a persistent or prolonged disability). If you plan on taking all the courses offered in a term, you will input 100% as your course load. If you plan on taking a reduced course load, please see below:

Where can I find my program’s full-time course load units?

  • You can find your program's course units here
  • Search for your program and then select the "courses tab"
  • The course tab will list all the courses needed per semester as well as the total credits.

Once you have found the total number of credits needed for your desired semester, you can now calculate your course load by dividing the total number of credits you plan to take by the total number of credits needed for that semester.

Scenario #1: John is enrolled in Year 1 Semester 1 of the Business Diploma program which requires that he takes 18 credits per semester. John wishes to take a reduced course load of 12 credits for the upcoming fall 2024 term. To calculate John's course load, we will take 12 credits (reduced courses) and divide it by 18 credits (total credits needed for Year 1 Semester 1). This equals 66% course load (12/18), which is the minimum enrolled units for a full-time course load for this program.

Scenario #2: Mikey is enrolled in Year 3 Semester 1 of the Honours Bachelor of Social and Community Development which requires that he takes 15 credits per semester. Mikey wishes to take a reduced course load of 6 credits for the upcoming fall 2024 term. To calculate Mikey's course load, we will take 6 credits (reduced courses) and divide it by 15 credits (total credits needed for Year 3 Semester 1). This equals 40% course load (6/15). This means that Mikey does not meet the requirement needed to apply for full-time OSAP funding. Mikey must submit a part-time OSAP application.

Scenario #3: Bob is enrolled in Year 1 Semester 2 of the Honours Bachelor of Computer Science (Mobile Computing), which requires students to complete 16 credits for semester 2. However, Bob plans on taking only 9 credits as he has identified as having a permanent disability and/or persistent or prolonged disability which means that his full-time course load requirement is only 40% for OSAP purposes. To calculate Bob's course load, we will take 9 credits (reduced courses) and divide it by 16 credits (total credits needed for Year 1 Semester 2). This equals 56% course load (9/16).
