You can leave Canada and return if your Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is still valid. However, your permit (study or work) does not act as a visa and does not permit re-entry to Canada. If your visa or eTA expired, you must obtain a new one before returning to Canada.
