What are vasospasms?

  • The tightening of blood vessels


Causes

  • Pressure on the nipple
  • Poor position and latch
  • Cold
  • Thrush
  • A tissue disorder


Signs and symptoms

  • Nipple(s):
    • Are painful
    • Sting
    • Tingle
    • Burn
    • Are numb
  • At the end of a feeding, nipples are white
  • After feeding, nipples may turn purple or red before returning to normal


Treatment

  • Seek support for positioning and latching
  • Put something warm on the nipple after feeding (avoid putting anything too hot on the nipple)
  • See your health care provider
