Is it safe to use tobacco or vaping products while breastfeeding/chestfeeding?
- It is safest to avoid using any tobacco or vaping products while breastfeeding/chestfeeding
- It is also best to avoid being near people who are smoking or vaping
Why is it safest to avoid using these products?
- Nicotine and other chemicals found in these products can pass from the feeding parent to the infant through breast milk
- These chemicals can get into the breast milk through a feeding parent using tobacco or vaping products or being near others when they are using these products
- Using these products increases an infant’s risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), respiratory illness which affect breathing, and ear infections
- Nicotine in breastmilk can also cause a baby to be fussy
- Smoking can decrease milk supply in the feeding parent
If I use tobacco or vaping products should I still breastfeed/chestfeed?
- Yes, breast milk is still the best food to give your baby
- To make it as safe for your baby as possible, try the following:
- Smoke outside or as far away from the baby as possible
- Change your clothes and wash your hands after smoking
- Decrease the amount you are using
- Smoke right after feeding to reduce the amount of chemicals in your breast milk at feeding time
