Is it safe to use tobacco or vaping products while breastfeeding/chestfeeding?

  • It is safest to avoid using any tobacco or vaping products while breastfeeding/chestfeeding
  • It is also best to avoid being near people who are smoking or vaping

Why is it safest to avoid using these products?

  • Nicotine and other chemicals found in these products can pass from the feeding parent to the infant through breast milk
    • These chemicals can get into the breast milk through a feeding parent using tobacco or vaping products or being near others when they are using these products
  • Using these products increases an infant’s risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), respiratory illness which affect breathing, and ear infections
  • Nicotine in breastmilk can also cause a baby to be fussy
  • Smoking can decrease milk supply in the feeding parent

If I use tobacco or vaping products should I still breastfeed/chestfeed?

  • Yes, breast milk is still the best food to give your baby
    • To make it as safe for your baby as possible, try the following:
      • Smoke outside or as far away from the baby as possible
      • Change your clothes and wash your hands after smoking
      • Decrease the amount you are using
      • Smoke right after feeding to reduce the amount of chemicals in your breast milk at feeding time
