Optimizing Milk Production:

  • Start breastfeeding as soon as possible after birth
  • Place baby skin to skin to promote attachment to the breast
  • Use hand expression to stimulate the flow of milk
  • Feed baby at least 8-12 times in 24 hours and offer both breasts each feed
  • Watch the baby at the breast and make sure baby is swallowing
  • Use breast compressions to keep baby swallowing at breast
  • Avoid the use of supplements
  • Avoid the use of artificial nipples until breastfeeding is well established
