  • Romance and relationships are an important part of your teen’s development


Talking To Your Teen about Relationships:

  • Having open discussions with your family can encourage your children to share their thoughts and feelings with you
  • You are the most important and influential role model
    • You can be a positive role model for relationships by treating your partner, friends, and family with respect and care


Helping Teens Choose Healthy Relationships:

  • Teach your teen that healthy relationships are based on self respect, respect for the other person and open communication
  • Teach teens about consent and that they don’t have to tolerate pressure from friends or partners, and they should not pressure friends or partners


Teenage Relationships:

  • May include exploration of intimacy, sexual feelings, and sexual attraction
  • Teens can spend a lot of time thinking about romantic relationships
  • Accept your teen for who they are; exploration and experimentation with sexuality is normal


When Do Teen Relationships Start?

  • There is no right time for teen relationships to start
  • Teens may also have no interest in romantic relationships until their late teens or early 20s


Teenage Relationships and Sexual Activity:

  • Not all teen relationships include sexual activity
  • Educating your teen on consent, birth control, safer sex practices, and sexually transmitted infections is crucial at this time


How to Support Your Teen through a Breakup:

  • Validate their feelings
  • Be there to listen and help them heal
  • Suggest a break from social media
  • Plan activities they enjoy
