What is bum scooting?
Bum scooting can also be called bottom shuffling. This is when babies sit upright and move around the room staying on their bum using their feet and legs. Babies can become very quick at moving around using bum scooting and often do not crawl or are late crawlers.
Should I be worried?
Typical bum scooters may appear to have a gross motor delay as they may have flexible joints, refuse to take weight through legs when in standing, delayed in rolling and delayed in crawling milestones. It would be helpful to see a Physiotherapist to ensure there is no other concerns.
How can I help?
Here are some activities or exercises to assist your baby in and out of sitting:
- Rolling both ways front to back and back to front
- With you sitting on the floor, have baby tummy down over your leg with their hands and feet down and your hand supporting them on their back
- Pull self to stand on low furniture/surfaces, weight bearing on legs and feet flat on the ground
