Is It Safe to Breastfeed While Pregnant?

  • If you have a normal, healthy pregnancy with no history of miscarriage in the first 20 weeks or preterm labour after 20 weeks it is safe to breastfeed
  • In a normal pregnancy, there is no evidence that breastfeeding deprives your unborn baby of nutrients
  • Oxytocin (the hormone released by nipple stimulation while breastfeeding) should not trigger early labour or miscarriage in a normal pregnancy

  • Women often find that their milk supply decreases around month 4 or 5
    • This is normal with the hormone changes of pregnancy
    • The breastfeeding baby may wean naturally at this time
  • When you start producing colostrum this may cause the breastfeeding child to stop feeding at least temporarily because the milk will taste saltier

How Will It Feel to Breastfeed While Pregnant?

  • May experience more fatigue, nausea, and nipple soreness
  • Your body will require additional calories and nutrients
