What is Tandem Feeding?
- The term used to describe breastfeeding siblings who are not twins
Why Would I Want to Tandem Feed?
- You would have a ready supply of milk for your newborn
- Decreased chances of mastitis because your toddler can suck stronger to keep the flow of milk, while your infant is learning how to breastfeed
- Connects toddler with new baby
- Maintains connection with toddler during a difficult transition period for them
How Do I Tandem Feed?
- You can feed your children at the same time, one after the other, or at completely separate times
- During the first few days of tandem feeding, you may want to give the newborn priority at the breast to ensure they get the antibodies and nutrients they need from the colostrum
- There are no special cleaning measures you need to take with your breasts, just regular cleanliness unless one of the children has a serious or highly contagious illness
- Eat a variety of healthy foods to help give you the nutrients you need for you and your children
- You are likely to feel hungrier, so you may want to eat more food than you did before your pregnancy
